Five Reasons You Never Need To Use Manual Exposure
Getting the right exposure for your pictures used to be the single trickiest part of taking photographs with a film camera. Camera makers have built all kinds of automatic systems to get the right amount of light onto the film, but you still had to wait until the prints came back from the lab to see if you had got things right.
These days, high end digital compacts and SLRs offer all manner of exposure modes, and “real” photographers still sing the praises of manually setting the aperture and shutter speed, as if it somehow makes a difference. But the range of features on these same cameras means that you never, ever have to leave the automatic program mode to get a perfect pic.
Live Preview
This is probably to biggest boon to the digital photographer. Being able to see on-screen exactly how the picture will look means you can get close to perfect every time, and you can double check that the auto mode is getting things right.
Live Histograms
A live histogram shows you the spread of light and dark tones in real time. This gives a more accurate representation of light levels than the live preview alone, and makes it easy to avoid clipping of extreme blacks and whites. If the subject is extremely high in contrast, you can still use the histogram to choose which parts of the picture you are willing to lose.
Exposure Compensation
This brings us to the real reason you never need to use the manual mode. Exposure compensation lets you leave the camera’s brain to work out the best exposure setting, but a simple spin of a dial will tweak those settings. Thus, if a bright light in the frame fools the camera into underexposing a shot, you can quickly override the mistake without switching modes.
Exposure Shift
Exposure shift adds in control over the shutter/aperture balance. Not always available on cheaper cameras, shift allows you to change the balance between the aperture and shutter speed while keeping the same exposure setting. You want to shoot at ƒ1.4 to throw the background out of focus? No problem. Spin the shift dial (or hit the buttons) and the camera will automatically up the shutter speed to compensate.
Exposure Lock
This one comes from the film world. If you don’t feel you can trust the built-in meter, despite the fact that the modern camera brain is almost telepathically accurate, you can use exposure lock. Point the camera at something you know to be a neutral tone (grass is good, and so is the back of a not-too-pale hand) and take a reading. Keep the shutter button halfway down to lock that setting and then take the picture of your problematic scene.
A digital camera is a gadget, and therefore has to pile on features to fill out the spec sheet. Arguably, though, most of them are useless. With the five features listed above, combined with a fully automatic mode, you have everything you need.
