Laser Guided Data Recovery Machines Can Be Used By “A Novice”
RetroData, the UK company which called Apple out for putting self-scratching hard drives in MacBooks, is on the cusp of selling a laser hard drive recovery device. The 25 75 kg (165lb.) behemoth will not actually grab any data from a crashed drive, but instead offers a cheap (by current standards) and safe way for small companies to actually get the platters from the drives using laser guided cutters.
The System P. EX (Platter Extraction System) will sell for £3500 ($5300), putting it into the range of non-trained operators. Given that people with dead drives and no backups tend to panic, we foresee a market springing up for dodgy, back-street data recovery.
