Tiny notebooks were around for a long time before the MacBook Air, but Apple’s lovely laptop has kicked the category to the forefront of fashion. Samsung is the latest to show a skinny new ultra-portable. The P200, easily confused with Samsung’s cellphone of the same name, is a little heavier than the Air, at 1.89 kg (4.17lbs.) but shrinks down to an easily-baggable 12.1 inches.

Inside there is an Intel Core2Duo, and ATI Xpress 1250 graphics card, and a built in 1.3MP camera. So far, not so different from the Mac. But the P200 has a whopping two (2!) USB ports, an ethernet port, a 6-in-1 card reader, and a PCI-X slot.

Also listed are the self explanatory Protect-o-Edge casing and, believe it or not, fairy dust, in the form of Silver Nano Technology:

By sprinkling incredibly small, nano-sized silver ion powder on the keyboard the P200 system will remain completely “bacteria free”.

With the iPhone SDK looking like it will be delayed for another week or two, Mac developers have the chance to fool around with another new toolkit and SDK thanks to graphics card maker Nvidia. After introducing its CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) technology in early 2007, Nvidia has finally released a Mac OS X specific version as well.

The programming environment, which is still in beta, provides a kind of language framework for working with GPUs and lets Leopard developers program certain Nvidia graphics processors to do general computing tasks just like their CPU brethren.

As we reported before, today’s GPUs are far from simply rendering and physics machines (although they’re certainly good at that). The advent of GPU programmability has seen graphics processors evolve into powerful parallel computing tools, too, capable of carrying multiple instructions simultaneously. That’s proved especially good news for the scientific community, who has embraced the use GPUs in research lately.

Indeed, GPUs are now being used to tackle a variety of computationally intensive tasks like cryptography and audio-signal processing, as well as molecular modeling and computational biology.

For now, the only catch is that CUDA is supported by a relatively small number of Nvidia’s own cards — specifically the GeForce 8 and Quadro FX series. Furthermore, MacBook Pros and Mac Pros and are the only computers from Apple configurable with CUDA supported cards.
